Activated carbon is made by heating organic matter such as wood, coal, and lignite, to leave a carbon residue, which is then activated by partial oxidation with carbon dioxide, steam, or oxygen in air. It comes in the forms of granular activated carbon and powdered activated carbon. It is a widely used sorbent applied to the removal of organic vapors from air, organic solutes from water, and to a certain extent, inorganic solutes from water. It is used for several purposes in waste treatment.
