Bimetallic Thermometer measures temperature by means of the differential thermal expansion of two metals. It is useful for alarm and over-temperature applications where extreme accuracy is not essential. It consists of two different metals (usually brass and iron) of different expansion coefficients rolled together, and usually formed into a spiral or helix. The bimetallic thermometer is usually the temperature-sensing part of the thermograph, an instrument that measures and records temperature. In a bimetallic thermometer differential expansion of bimetallic strips is used to indicate the temperature. It makes use of the coefficient of the linear expansion principle.
