A spring-loaded check valve is designed to eliminate the orientation restrictions associated with a swing check. Depending on the strength of the spring, it requires one, two or more pounds of pressure before the spring-loaded gate opens. They are also made to respond to certain water pressure. These valves rely on a small internal spring to close the valve's disc whenever fluid is not moving in the intended direction. The valve opens whenever fluid pressure on the inlet side of the valve exceeds the tension of the spring.

A spring-loaded safety relief valve is designed to open and release steam into the atmosphere, if the boiler pressure gets too high. It is capable of discharging the atmosphere in a full flow of gas from the compressor at a pressure not exceeding 300 psig. Each boiler is equipped with a spring-loaded safety relief valve.
