Direct burial cable is similar to normal cable in appearance, how ever direct burial cable is clearly marked on its sheathing. Sheathing for direct burial cable is created with plastic and provides a coating that allows direct burial cable to be buried without the need for conduit. How ever if direct burial cable is run above ground, it must be protected by being installed in a conduit. A minimum depth of 24 inches is required when the cable is installed under streets, highways, roads, alleys, driveways or parking lots.
