Electrostatic separator is a process for selective sorting of solid species by means of the electric forces which act on charged or polarized bodies. An electrostatic separator contains at least four components: a charging discharging mechanism, an external electric field, a non-electrical particle trajectory device and feed & product collection systems. Charging by contract electrification is an active mechanism whenever dissimilar particles make and break contact with each other or whenever they slide over a chute or an electrode. This charging mechanism is most frequently used to charge selectively and obtain an electrostatic separation of two species of dielectric materials as realized in a free fall electrostatic separator. Depending on the charging mechanism the electrostatic separator systems are classified in to three categories as free fall separator, high-tension separator and conduction separator.
