Enamel paints are based on varnish, polyurethane, or alkyd resin. The alkyd resin is a type of thermosetting plastic. Some of the newer enamel paints are acrylic and can be thinned with water. Enamel hardens to a tough film, is weather resistant, and adheres to most surfaces. Enamel paints come in many formulations, for both interior and exterior work. These paints are readily applied to primed, previously painted, or galvanized-metal surfaces. Surface preparation includes the removal of dirt, oil, grease, and other surface contaminats.
