Gear coupling is a mechanical device for transmitting torque between two shafts that are not coaxial. It consists of a flexible joint fixed to each shaft. The two joints are connected by a third shaft, called the spindle. It consists of involute-toothed hubs which mesh with an intermediate sleeve or shaft. They allow significant amounts of angular misalignment and axial movement. Gear couplings have higher torque densities than universal joints designed to fit a given space while universal joints induce lower vibrations. The gear coupling equipment has five major components such as two hubs, two sleeves and spacer. It also has a number of bolts, nuts, lockwashers, and two or more seals. The spacer is omitted when the separation between the connected shafts is small. The hubs have a row of external teeth with involute profile; the sleeves have matching internal teeth.
