I beam is a beam with an I- or H-shaped cross-section. The horizontal elements are flanges and the vertical element is called web. The cross-section has a reduced capacity in the transverse direction, and is also inefficient in carrying torsion, for which hollow structural sections are often preferred. Two forms of I-beam are available: rolled I beam, which is formed by extrusion or rolling and plate girder that is shaped by welding.
