Steel rule dies also called metalform dies, consists of heavy strip steel mounted in a standard die set, which serves as the cutting edge. Plastic and paper cutting steel-rule dies are mounted on a heavy plywood plate. The way the strip steel is attached to the block (at a 90 degree angle), its function is the same as that of a cutting knife. But with its thin profile, it will display a tendency to swelling and buckling. So the strip steel’s compressive force should be twice the amount of the cut material shear coefficient. It is usually equipped with neoprene or rubber strippers, slightly exceeding the height of the blades. Punches and dies are standard; they are used to pierce openings while the steel rule is cutting the outline of the part.
