Voltage regulator is a device that maintains the terminal voltage of a generator or other voltage source within required limits despite variations in input voltage or load. This is also known as automatic voltage regulator. These are used wherever the unregulated voltage would vary more than can be tolerated by the electrical equipment using that voltage. The alternating-current distribution feeders use regulators to keep the voltage supplied to the user within a prescribed range. The electronic equipment often has voltage regulators in dc power supplies.
