Plastic filters are very inexpensive and generally stable. It can be cut readily to the desired size & shape and are flexible and convenient to use. These filters consist of infrared absorbing dyes dissolved in some transparent host medium in amounts such as to provide the desired optical properties. The plastic substrate used in the preparation of the filters is not critical so long as it meets the requirements of the resulting filter, that is, is self-supporting, durable, stable and easily manufactured. Filters are made from thermoplastics, which are prepared by melting thermoplastic resins and dyes.
