Fluidized bed technology is widely used in the pharmaceutical industry for drying, granulating, and coating. Fluid bed dryer comprises of a top fluidizing chamber & a bottom air distribution chamber separated by a specially designed perforated plate. A fluid bed dryer significantly reduces drying time compared with a tray dryer or vacuum dryer. It exposes the entire product surface area to the high-volume air stream and heat is transferred to the product surface by convection. However, if the inlet air velocity is not properly selected, consistent and uniform drying will not be obtained. The feed of wet materials is dried by intimate contact with hot air when the material is in a fluidized state. A vibrating mechanism can be attached to give a forward motion cum agitation to the product at a controlled rate. Uniform processing conditions are achieved by passing a gas (usually air) through a product layer under controlled velocity conditions to create a fluidized state. Examples of fluid bed dryer designs are two-tier dryer for polymer, four-stage dryer for organic product and three-stage dryer for bulk chemicals. This can be applied in mile powder, detergents, lactose, agglomerated powders, cheese powder, fruit pellets and salt.
