Spray guns form a coating by directing atomized paints, adhesives, liquids or powders toward a surface. Its mission is to atomize refinishing material. It takes paint droplets and divides them into thousands of tiny particles. The size of the individual particles depends on surface tension and the viscosity of the fluid stream, and the compressed air at the nozzle prevents the fluid from exiting the tip in a continuous stream. Spray guns are used with both air and airless processes.

Full cone spray nozzle is the most common nozzle type in use. It is available in virtually any material and several spray angles, the pattern generated by this type of nozzle swirls the fluid into a solid cone pattern. There are three basic designs of full cone nozzles such as axial, helix and vaneless full cone nozzles.

A solid stream spray nozzle is basically a uniform stream of liquid emitted through a drilled hole. However, this type nozzle is refined by the use of proper inlet chamber proportions and contours ahead of the orifice and/or by addition of internal flow stabilizing vanes. This nozzle provides prolonged solid stream integrity and delays the start of breakup and drop formation after leaving the nozzle orifice.

A spray paint booth is used to collect over spray paint and to remove solvent fumes from a work area. A conventional spray paint gun uses air to atomize paint and to provide a spray or fan pattern. Included in the paint sprayer group are a high pressure, low volume sprayer, airless sprayer, airless spray paint roller, and diaphragm paint sprayer.

A spray plating method is used wherein a multiplicity of spray nozzles mounted on a feed pipe, direct a high velocity spray at an article to be plated. The spray is deflected onto portions of the article by metal deflectors located near the article. The deflectors serve as the anode of the plating process. This results in a high current density and a high plating rate. The method is used for hard plating gold onto connector pins or other articles on a continuous strip-plating line.
