Surfactant is also known as wetting agents. It is used to lower the surface tension of coatings and paints. Surfactants also lower the interfacial tension between two liquids. It reduces the surface tension of water by adsorbing at the liquid-gas interface. It also reduces the interfacial tension between oil and water by adsorbing at the liquid-liquid interface. Surfactant is classified by the presence of formally charged groups in its head. It is divided into four primary groups such as anionic, cationic, non-ionic, and dual charge.

Surfactant is defined as a material that reduces the surface tension of water when used in very low concentrations. They are water-soluble surface-active agents comprised of a hydrophobic portion usually a long alkyl chain attached to hydrophilic or water solubility enhancing functional groups. Surfactants possess the common property of lowering surface tension when added to water in small amounts.

Surge arresters provides lightning protection for transmission and distribution systems. It is a protective device designed primarily for connection between a conductor of an electrical system and ground to limit the magnitude of transient over voltages on equipment. This is also called as arrester; lightning arrester. This is really a voltage-surge arrester. A typical surge arrester consists of disks of zinc oxide material sized in cross-sectional area to provide desired energy discharge capability and in axial length proportional to the voltage capability. These disks are then placed in porcelain enclosures to provide physical support and heat removal and then sealed for isolation from contamination in the electrical environment. This is also used at bonding points of the capable system. They are referred to as sheath voltage limiter arresters. Those using metal oxide nonlinear resistors are used extensively in HVDC schemes for voltage protection. These are also applied within AC harmonic filters.

Surge Arrestors is a device that limits overvoltages by conducting large currents in response to an overvoltage. They are typically connected line to ground in transmission and primary distribution systems. They can be employed in a variety of connections in secondary distribution and can be necessary in communications, sensing and control circuits. It consists of three types of surge arrestors which includes rod spark gapped, multiple gapped arrestors and zinc oxide surge arrestors.
