Directional drilling is the science of drilling non-vertical wells. Directional drilling can be broken down into three main groups: oilfield directional drilling, utility installation directional drilling and in-seam directional drilling (coal-bed methane). The directional well has the ability of the bit to move laterally is used to have the hole curve along a predetermined path. Directional drilling is used to deflect up-structure in faulted areas, to avoid water, to improve well production and to include multiple exploration wells from a single well bore.

Directional well drilling is a process that controls the drilling direction in a well. Directional well driller's main body is couplable to a drill string, and a nose tubing that is movably mounted by a universal joint in the main body. A collar with a bore engages in a cam-like manner with an extension of the nose tubing on the drill string side of the universal joint. The collar is movable longitudinally to control the magnitude of the nose tubing, and circumferentially to control the azimuth. The nose tubing is aligned on both sides of the universal joint and the bore of the collar is angled relative to the main axis of the main body. The collar may be hydraulically or electrically controlled.

Down hole geophysics saves drilling time and associated costs when looking for step-out targets and utilizes a 3D-component probe capable of obtaining both magnetic and electromagnetic data. The data obtained by the 3D probe is gathered from both in-hole and off-hole magnetic and electromagnetic sources and once processed, provides a vectoring tool for future drill holes. Additionally, a tight-spaced ground magnetic survey commences immediately to cover all identified target areas. This provides greater detail and definition than airborne surveys.
