Chain slings are used primarily for overhead lifting and are generally used in conjunction with a crane or some type of lifting device. Standard sling configurations consist of chain branches, which are affixed on one end to a master link or ring, with some type of attachment, usually a hook, affixed to the opposite end. These are used when there are especially heavy loads or when the sling will be subjected to heat that would damage the core of a wire rope or the synthetic material in a web sling. These are used less often on most construction jobs, because they are heavy and the chain links may damage the load.
