Cable faults may arise from two main sources: electrical breakdown or mechanical damage. Faults may be categorized as a high- or low-resistance, conductor-to-earth or conductor-to-conductor, or a conductor open-circuit fault. Fault location is generally carried out by use of Murray loop - type bridge devices or pulse-echo-type devices.

Cable locator is a fully adjustable signal output. It has an ac plug adapter that is used for tracing the path of energized or de-energized 120-V ac circuits in walls and ceilings. The transmitter and the receiver are powered by a 9-V battery each. These are used for locating buried telephone cables.
