Wireless alarm systems typically operate on 14 volts from an ordinary 120 volt electricity outlet. The system has a central control station that has a transformer, which steps down the house current to the required 14 volt. Remote sensors are mounted on the doors and windows. These sensors are connected to a transmitter that is typically powered by a 9-volt battery. The alarm system is thus wireless since the transmitter needs to physical connect to the central control station. The alarm can be connected to the local police station or can simply activate an alarm inside the house and, perhaps, a siren outside. This system also can operate medical alarms, smoke monitors and glass breakage sensors. The sensors are mounted on the door, the window casing and the window stile.

Wireless Barcode Scanners are software dependent. These are handheld devices that allow to freely move about while scanning barcodes. The scanner then sends the data across a wireless connection to a base-station connected to a PC or laptop computer. They create a leap in efficiency by enabling real time data collection.
