Feed water pump is used to pump water into a steam boiler. The water may be freshly supplied or returning condensate produced as a result of the condensation of the steam produced by the boiler. These pumps are normally high pressure units that use suction from a condensate return system and can be of the centrifugal pump type or positive displacement type. Feed water pumps range in size up to many horsepower and the electric motor is usually separated from the pump body by some form of mechanical coupling. Feed water pumps usually run intermittently and are controlled by a float switch or other similar level-sensing device energizing the pump when it detects a lowered liquid level in the boiler. The pump then runs until the level of liquid in the boiler is substantially increased.

Fire Dampers are usually required to be installed wherever air distribution systems penetrate a rated assembly. Fire Dampers are used in HVAC ductwork. The fire damper automatically interrupts the flow of air through the duct system during an emergency. It restricts the passage of smoke, fire and heat. It must be installed whenever a duct passes through a wall, ceiling or floor that is part of a fire-rated assembly. A fire damper includes a fusible link on either side of the assembly the duct penetrates. This link melts during a fire, causing the fire damper to close and seal the duct. Access for maintenance and inspection of fire dampers is required by the building codes. Access doors are normally installed at fire dampers for servicing and inspection.

Flame scanners are crucial to the safe operation of a combustion system. Flame Scanners comes in two main varieties that include infrared and ultraviolet. Ultraviolet scanners are more sensitive and quicker to respond. If the flame is out, the fuel flow into the combustion enclosure is stopped and the area is purged before a re-light can be attempted. The detector is a gas filled tube that scintillates in the presence of flame ultraviolet radiation and emits bursts of current, called an avalanche, several hundred times per second as long as the flame continues. Use of infrared scanners is desirable of there is a waste stream, such as sulfur, which absorbs ultraviolet light and makes operation of ultraviolet scanners unreliable.

The flue-gas ductwork system is placed between the boiler outlet and the chimney. There can be many large pieces of equipment in the system. For a coal-fired boiler when the outlet flue-gas passes through an air pre-heater, it is cooled. Then the cooled flue-gas is passed through an electrostatic precipitator or a fabric filter, which would result in the removal of the flyash particles from the flue-gas. Finally the sulfur is removed from the flue-gas with the help of ID fans and a flue-gas desulphurization system, or scrubber.

Flue Gas Recirculation Systems are used to measure temperature, capacitance, frequency and duty cycle measurements. It reduces nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions (up to 60 percent) in industrial boilers by recirculating a portion of the boiler flue gas (up to 20 percent) into the main combustion chamber. It also reduces the peak combustion temperature and lowers the percentage of oxygen in the combustion air/flue gas mixture.

Forced Draft Fans are used in power plants. It supplies the air necessary for fuel combustion and must be sized to handle the stoichiometric air, plus the excess air needed for proper burning of the specific fuel for which they are designed. It provides air to make up for air heater leakage and for some sealing air requirements. Forced draft fans supply the total airflow except when an atmospheric-suction primary -air fan is used. It operates in the cleanest environment associated with a boiler and is generally the most efficient fans in the power plant. Centrifugal airfoil or variable-pitch fans are preferred for FD service. If steam coils or other means of heating the air ahead of the FD fans are provided, the consequent air temperature to the fans must be taken into account.
