A hydraulic motor works in reverse compared to a pump. The pump drives its fluid, while the motor is driven by its fluid. Thus, the pump draws in fluid and pushes it out, converting mechanical force into fluid force. Whereas in the motor, fluid is forced in and exhausted out, converting fluid into mechanical force. Hydraulic motor converts hydraulic working energy into rotary mechanical energy, which is applied to a resisting object by means of a shaft. The rotary or turning effort capability of the motor is call torque. Torque indicates that a force is present at a distance from the motor shaft. A resisting object attached to a motor shaft generates a torque. This is a resistance for the motor, which must be overcome by hydraulic pressure acting on the motor's operating mechanism.

Hydraulic power units are used for providing high-pressurized flow to hydraulic motors, cylinders, and various hydraulic components. It consists of multiple pump stages, fluid reservoir, and cooler to maintain fluid at a safe working temperature. It is available in many different operating pressures, flows, powers, and reservoir capacities.

A hydraulic pump creates the pressure that moves the pistons. It delivers high-pressure fluid flow to the pump outlet. Hydraulic pumps are powered by mechanical energy sources to pressurize fluid. A hydraulic ram pump is a device, which uses the energy of falling water to lift a lesser amount of water to a higher elevation than the source. There are only two moving parts, thus there is little to wear out.  Hydraulic rams are relatively economical to purchase and install.  One can be built with detailed plans and if properly installed, they will give many trouble-free years of service with no pumping costs.  For these reasons, the hydraulic ram is an attractive solution where a large gravity flow exists.  A ram should be considered when there is a source that can provide at least seven times more water than the ram is to pump and the water is, or can be made, free of trash and sand.  There must be a site for the ram at least 0.5m below the water source and water must be needed at a level higher than the source.

Telescopic shock absorbers can be designed to reduce lateral, vertical or yaw motion. The shocks are mounted at angles that simulate the mounting position.

Hydrostatic pumps are the source of fluid power for a hydraulic motor. It generates fluid pressure and flow such that hydraulic motor will operate at a rotational velocity and torque. Hydrostatic motors then convert fluid power given by the hydrostatic pump into mechanical power, or work. Hydrostatic pumps are available and designed to operate at most desired speeds.
