Magnetic Flowmeters are designed to measure the flow of electrically conductive liquids in a closed pipe. There are no moving parts to wear and no pressure drop other than that offered by the section pipe of equal length and inside diameter. They measure the flow of rate based on the voltage created between two electrodes as the water passes through an electromagnetic field. The voltage depends on magnetic field strength. This is also known as electromagnetic flowmeters or induction flowmeters. This places electric coils around the pipe for the flow to be measured and sets up a pair of electrodes across the pipe wall or at the tip of the flowmeters. These are used to measure flow of conductive liquids in both forward and reverse directions. They do not work with hydrocarbons distilled water and many non-aqueous solutions. The advantage of these flowmeters is no obstruction to flow, minimal head loss, wide range of sizes and no moving parts. This is based on Faraday's law.

Mass Flow meters have moving parts and complex mechanical designs. It consists of a mass flow sensor or transducer. This is an instrument that measures the mass of fluid that flows through a pipe, duct, or open channel in a unit time. The mass flow of homogenous gases is most frequently measured by thermal flow meters. The main advantage is that when the specific heat of the process fluid changes due to composition or temperature changes, this will register as a change in mass flow. The mass flow of liquids and gases has been detected by angular momentum devices and indirectly through the measurement of volumetric flow and density. It has good accuracy and very high range ability. The modern mass flow meters are based on coriolis effect. This can be measured by batch weighing or by combining an accurate level sensor with a densitometer. This meter can handle high temperatures over 400-degree farenheit.

Oil fired water heaters use an oil burner and a combustion chamber (similar to an oil-fired furnace), which is located below the tank, as the heat source to heat the water. When the thermostat (at the bottom of the tank) senses that the water temperature has fallen below the preset limit, the oil burner will ignite. A jet-like flame is created in the combustion chamber to heat the bottom of the tank. In addition, the hot exhaust gases from the combustion chamber are vented either through a hollow core at the center of the tank (like a gas-fired system) or around the tank to help heat the water. The exhaust is then passed into the vent connector and directed to a chimney flue.

On/Off level controller is the simplest form of temperature control device. The output from the device is either on or off, with no middle state. This will switch the output only when the temperature crosses the set point. This prevents the output from chattering or making fast, continual switches if the cycling above and below the set point occurs very rapidly. They are commonly used in simple applications such as thermostats in heating systems and domestic refrigerators. They are modified to include a dead band for the error signal to reduce the sensitivity to measurement noise. This is sometime referred to as two-position or bangs control. One special type of on-off control used for alarm is a limit controller. This uses a latching relay, which must be manually reset, and is used to shut down a process when a certain temperature is reached. They are inexpensive and easy to implement. The disadvantage of these controllers is the cycling of the controlled variable, which is unacceptable in a quality control problem and usually leads to excessive wear and tear on the final control element.

Orifice Flowmeters used for the absolute calibration of flow meters. They provide calibration at flowrates greater than 200 1/min. These show a slightly higher stream flow than the ASME sharp-edged orifice. They employ a tapered float assembly and a fixed diameter orifce. They are generally less expensive to install and manufacture than the other commonly used differential pressure flowmeters. This is installed between flanges connecting two pipe sections. They are less than 0.05D thick.

pH meter is an electronic instrument used to measure the pH (acidity or alkalinity) of a liquid. A typical pH meter consists of a special measuring probe (a glass electrode) connected to an electronic meter that measures and displays the pH reading. They range from simple and inexpensive pen-like devices to complex. They also have expensive laboratory instruments with computer interfaces and several inputs for indicator (ion-sensitive, redox), reference electrodes and temperature sensors such as thermoresistors or thermocouples. This has a probe, which measures the concentration of hydrogen ions surrounding a thin-walled glass bulb at its tip. This probe produces a small voltage that is measured and displayed as pH units by a meter.
